Calling this one straight away. Supports the Bill. Has just said media around this issue has been ignorant! This from someone who doesn't seem to be able to say 'unintended'. Is now proposing to tell us 'the facts'. Calls the Bill 'unique and common sense'.
Says: Has been all over the place, and is very sad she risks losing friends over this. She has come to this Bill asking if it improves current law? Refers to Cameron Stewart's ABC Law Report. There is a gap where the driver could not be charged with manslaughter. This Bill attempts to allow a separate change for GBH. Thinks we have wide access to abortion in NSW (????) Refers to Catholic QCs who wrote to Chris Spence MP. Has been persuaded there is a gap in the law. Biggest concern is recognition of foetus as a person as it pits the rights of women against the rights of a foetus. This raises concerns for mothers who might be prosecuted for unwitting harm to their children. Proponents points to definitions, exemptions and what the proponents of Bill say are safeguards. I have spoken to many in the legal profession would be accepted into common law, and if I thought this Bill would have unintended consequences. At some point we have to draw a line. Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Yes. Supporting Bill/ removing repro rights. Is now lecturing everyone about setting aside 'tired stereotypes' of the 'deba
Wearing purple? Wrong colour. Thanks to our friends in this place who helped sort this out. They are reading the Bill without a full galler
Says: I wanted to support this Bill, but after my eon research and consultation with my constituents, including people of faith, I cannot support this Bill in its current form #ourchoice
Member says: Will not be supporting the Bill. While the Bill has good intentions, it raises many legal and ethical issues. Much as I sympathise with the arguments of the Donegans, I must consider the views of my constituents who are overwhelmingly opposed to the Bill. All express the same concern, that this Bill will open the door to further restrictions on abortion care.
The Member has gotten the first giggle of the day from the Gallery! "If something is moral, it will become legal." Says: Unborn babies should be entitled to the protection of the law. Life begins at conception. Clearly hasn't read the Bill- at least one of the offences he name checked is NOT one that refers to GBH, but is named in the Bill. #ourchoice
Says this Bill is much better than Fred Nile's earlier Bill. Also says his vote does not cast judgement on the competing interests.
The member for Fairfield says this Bill is not about a woman's right to choose, because it's about 'justice'. Obviously, he thinks the two are unrelated. #ourchoice
Says: what is clear to me after copious amounts of reading is we in this place should not take the granting of personhood lightly. Such a Bill should be considered very carefully over a period of time. I have closely read the AMA, Bar Association advice, and the Ca peel Review. I cannot lightly ignore the amount of expert advice I have seen and those who have serious and legitimate concerns. Therefore, I believe one of the appropriate courses is to be referred through a committee process of this House. I cannot support the Bill in its current form. #ourchoice
